Go: Municipal Rose Garden
The Municipal Rose Garden is one of San Jose’s treasures. Any season of the year is a swell time to while away the hours in this lovely park, but right now is prime: the roses are in bloom and they’re spectacular. Add the grandeur of the fountain, the chirping birds, the springtime warmth, and you’ll find yourself planning your return before you leave.
I now live close to the Rose Garden; even though I’m new to the neighborhood, I’m already surging with pride over the splendor of this park. I’m thankful for the people who had the vision to create it.
The brief history is as follows:
In 1927, 5.5 acres were reserved just outside of downtown.
In 1931, the project began.
In 1937, the Municipal Rose Garden was completed and dedicated.
On Wednesday night I had some friends over and asked them to join me for an evening walk. I knew exactly where I was taking them: I wanted to surprise them with the roses. It was fun, they were awestruck. I loved seeing the life and activity at dusk: the fountain was still on and couples were picnicking and cuddling in nooks and crannies throughout the garden. I felt like I was strolling through a Parisian park.
The cherry on top is that this is a completely free outing; parking and entrance both cost nothing. Parking is easy: the garden is a square block and you can park on any of the 4 sides. (Does anyone else have a soft spot for parks designed in a square with homes surrounding the square? Is there a name for this design?)
